If you cannot unlock your own Android phone, start with the device maker’s support instructions and Google’s official recovery guidance. This article does not provide a way to bypass another person’s screen lock or Google account protection.
Understand the data-loss risk
Google’s Android unlock guidance explains that a phone you cannot unlock may need to be erased and set up again. Erasing removes local data. Restoring a backup depends on what was actually backed up and the credentials required to access it. There is no promise that a forgotten lock can be removed while preserving every file.
Use the official route for your device
Google describes remote erasure when the phone meets the listed requirements, including connectivity, a signed-in account and Find Hub. It also describes resetting with device buttons and directs users to their manufacturer’s instructions for the exact procedure. Read those instructions before taking any action; button combinations and recovery screens vary.
Be ready to verify ownership
After a reset, follow the device’s account-verification prompts. If you cannot access the relevant Google account, use Google’s account-recovery process. For a second-hand phone, ask the seller to resolve the ownership/account issue through the normal supported process. If you need a service centre, take proof of purchase and ask about the effect on stored data before agreeing to work.
Protect your information
Do not share account passwords, verification codes or recovery codes with someone promising an instant unlock. Treat guarantees of universal unlocking or guaranteed recovery without a backup with caution. Keep purchase records, maintain recovery information and make regular backups so a future reset is less disruptive.
What this guide does not offer
We do not recommend lock-file deletion, modified unlocking software or methods to defeat Factory Reset Protection. Use official support for a device you own or are authorized to administer.
Before you reset
Check whether any needed information already exists in an accessible backup or another device. Read the official reset instructions from beginning to end. If the consequences are unclear, stop and consult the device manufacturer before erasing the phone.
